OSLO: THE THEORY AND THE REALITY

By Dr. Steven E. Plaut

Today was the most violent day to date in Hebron since the decision by Netanyahu to out-Oslo the Labor Party and to withdraw out of Hebron in exchange for - absolutely nothing. The theory was of course that it was in Israel's own interest to give up Hebron. As long as Israel held it - or so the Oslo argument went - Arabs would stone Jews, attack Jews in Hebron, and Hebron would be a sewer of Arab terror and hatred. And since the withdrawal? Did tensions relax? Well, turn on the TV! Arab violence in Hebron and Arab Nazi-like hatred has escalated manifold since the Hebron withdrawal. Today Arabs attacked Jews in Hebron with petrol bombs, acid, rocks, etc. Some yeshiva students defended their lives killed two Arabs attacking them, triggering yet more attacks on Jews.(April 8, 1997)

So to sum things up to date:

OSLO - The Theory OSLO - The Reality
1. After each step in withdrawing Israeli troops from Arab towns, the level of Arab violence will diminish. After each step in withdrawing Israeli troops from towns, the level of Arab violence increases.
2. When Israeli troops are removed from Arab population centers, the hatred by Arabs for Jews will diminish. When Israeli troops are removed from Arab population centers, the hatred by Arabs for Jews increases.
3. With Israeli goodwill gestures, step by step, Arabs will demonstrate good will and lowered hostility. With Israeli goodwill gestures, step by step, Arabs demonstrate increasingly Nazi-like hatred of Jews and increased xenophobia.
4. With each advance along the path of Oslo, gestures of Arab hatred like rock throwing and burning Israeli flags will diminish. With each advance along the path of Oslo, gestures of Arab hatred like rock throwing and burning Israeli flags increases.
5. The more Israel makes concessions and withdraws from Arab territory, the less Palestinians will support atrocities and terror against Jews. The more Israel makes concessions and withdraws from Arab territory, the more Palestinians support atrocities and terror against Jews.
6. The more openly Israel indicates it will accept a Palestinian state, the more willing will the Arabs be to accept Israel's existence. The more openly Israel indicates it will accept a Palestinian state, the less willing the Arabs are to accept Israel's existence.
7. Making concessions to the Arabs makes them less extreme and more peaceful. Making concessions to the Arabs makes them more extreme and less peaceful. It makes them much MORE bloodthirsty.
